As a followup from the previous post, one of the major contributors to our donation drive was Hobby Ideas (Thanks Prerna). The amount of art and craft materials were received was seriously a lot. We were restricted at Tata Memorial Hospital as there were only 50 children of various age groups and hence even after distributing we actually had a lot more crayons, paints and various other items from Hobby Ideas.
One of our merry Elf, Deepika Tharwani (she is not on Twitter) told us about the Asha Kiran Charitable Trust and their need for basic teaching necessities.
To give a little background, Asha Kiran is a wonderful NGO that believes in Education For All. They have 7 Centres around Andheri West where volunteers educate street children. The NGO works prominently on donation and volunteers. Each Centre caters to approx 40-50 kids wherein they also provide two meals to each child every day.
The so-called 'Centres' are basically designated areas on pavements where the kids sit together and learn. Some of you might have even seen them while traveling through Andheri West. Deepika visited two such centres in Andheri West. The primary requirement for the kids were finding it difficult to write due to lack of infrastructure. They suggested if we could arrange for basic stationery items and some writing pads.
Deepika collected money from friends and family amounting to INR 5000 [Yes, Five Thousand Rupees] and bought colourful writing pads of Dora the Explorer, Barbie, Bal Ganesha, Angry Birds and Ben10 (see the pics below. The BalGanesha was extremely popular). Armed with the writing pads, Hobby Ideas art and craft material and the donated chocolates, we decided to be Santas on 25th December 2013 early morning.
There is even more items left from the donation drive and the final lot was distributed on 26th December 2013. Pictures coming soon.
We love you all for being so generous and thank you for allowing us to bask in good karma that you achieved for us.
-Head Santa.
